TLC Timeline

In May 2010, the Office of the Vice President (Academic) voted to support the development of a Teaching and Learning Framework that would guide the structure of teaching and learning at Memorial and document a promise to provide ongoing support and attention to the preservation and enhancement of teaching and learning, and demonstrate the university’s devotion to educators and learners.

The warm, welcoming, persevering culture of Newfoundland and Labrador has been engrained in Memorial since its establishment. So it’s only natural that the Teaching and Learning Community inherit those same traits.

As an inclusive community dedicated to creativity, innovation and excellence in teaching and learning, research and scholarship, and to public engagement and service, Memorial recognizes its special obligation as the only university in the province to provide access to a university education for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The process that eventually formed the Teaching and Learning Framework document began with a retreat that brought together 90 members of the university family, including educators, students and staff. The purpose was to identify the qualities that all Memorial University graduates should demonstrate once their time with us is complete.

Participants also shared stories of their most inspirational stories of teaching and learning in their lives.
This remains the heart of the Teaching and Learning Community (affectionately known as the TLC) in our quest to provide you with the most inspirational experiences possible during your Memorial life.

Following this was a year of consultations with 12 advisory committees, surveys, brainstorming sessions, and focus groups which further informed the full framework document (Appendix AAppendix BAppendix C), which the university Senate committee unanimously endorsed on May 10, 2011.
